FULL HOUSE
Original Airdate: October 25, 1959

Synopsis. In Denver, Bret wins $2,000 playing cards with a man who is temporarily short of cash. Maverick wants the man’s fancy tie pin as collateral, but the man is reluctant to give up what he calls his “good luck charm.” After a struggle, Bret walks away with the tie pin, while the man is arrested. Later, in the nearby town of Bubbly Springs, Maverick discovers that the man with the tie pin is a renowned criminal operative named Foxy Smith, who has arranged to meet Cole Younger, Billy the Kid, Willie Thimble, Sam Bass, Black Bart, Ben Thompson, Jesse James, and Belle Starr to plan a big job. None of the outlaws have ever seen Smith—they only know him by his trademark tie pin. When Maverick arrives in town, they mistake him for Foxy Smith.

Executive producer William T. Orr first came up with the premise for this episode, which features future Academy Award winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) as Billy the Kid and future Beverly Hillbillies star Nancy Kulp in a small role as a waitress whose tears lead Maverick into a trap.

THE LONG HUNT
Original Airdate: October 20, 1957

Synopsis. Maverick befriends Lefty Dolan, a bank robber who rescued Bret from “a parcel of very disappointed poker players.” Their friendship is cut short when Lefty is gunned down by two other holdup men—but before he dies, Lefty tells Bret an incredible story. Several years earlier, he and three others had pulled a bank robbery in Dry Springs, Arizona. A man named Jed Ferris, who bore a slight physical resemblance to Lefty, was arrested and convicted for the crime. Lefty, whose conscience has bothered him over the fact that an innocent man has paid for his crime, asks Bret to do whatever he can to clear Jed’s name.

“The Long Hunt” features two of the most famous Pappyisms of all: “Hell has no fury like a man who loses with four of a kind” and “Love your fellow man, and stay out of his troubles if you can.”

THE GREAT BLUE LAKE LAND AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
Original Air Date: October 17, 1975

Synopsis. En route to Los Angeles to deliver a client’s $10,000 bail money, Rockford becomes stranded in the small desert town of Great Blue Lake after his car breaks down. Needing a place to store the money overnight, he deposits the cash with Murray Johnson, a salesman at the Great Blue Lake Land and Development Company (the only building in town with a safe). But when Jim arrives to pick up the money in the morning, he finds that the money is gone—and that nobody named Johnson works for the company. With the help of Rocky and con artis Harry Danova, Rockford plots a sting to recover his money, but drops his plans when company president Walter Hart suddenly returns the $10,000. However, when the phantom Murray Johnson is found murdered, Rockford becomes the prime suspect.

A variation of the classic Maverick episode “Shady Deal at Sunny Acres,” “The Great Blue Lake Land and Development Company” also marks the first instance in which The Rockford Files used the Jim Rockford character to address certain social inequities. This is a characteristic for which Rockford would become particularly known beginning in the third season.

GHOST RIDER
Original Airdate: October 13, 1957

Synopsis. Maverick has a bad day in the town of White Rock. First, he’s robbed of $3,000 by a young punk known as “The Kid” (played by Edd Byrnes). Then he discovers that The Kid not only lost all of his money playing poker, but was shot and killed for cheating. Then Bret loses his coat (containing the $1,000 bill he keeps for emergencies) after helping out a red-haired woman who, according to the townsfolk, died ten days earlier. When Maverick returns to town, he’s nearly shot to death by the undertaker. When the undertaker, a very popular man in town, is later gunned down by a man named Foster (who matches Bret’s general physical appearance), Maverick becomes the likely suspect.

THE BELCASTLE BRAND

Synopsis. In Wyoming, Bret collapses outside Belcastle Manor, the home of an eccentric family of British aristocrats. After the Belcastles nurse him back to health, Bret earns his keep by leading the family on a bear hunt across the desert. But the expedition comes to a sudden halt when the Shaughnessy gang robs the group of their supplies—and leaves them to die in the desert.

“The Belcastle Brand” features one of the most famous Pappyisms of the entire Maverick series: “It would be a pitiful thing if you had to work for a living. Son, use your wits; the good Lord didn’t give you brains.”

THE CATS OF PARADISE
Original Airdate: October 11, 1959

Synopsis. Bret goes into business selling cats to a town besieged by rats and mice. Bret doesn’t realize that his charming partner, Modesty Blaine, is also a crafty, and completely amoral, con artist who robs him of $500 and nearly has him shanghaied. Maverick locates Modesty in Paradise, where he finds her conveniently protected by the town’s two-faced mayor and its superstitious but equally corrupt sheriff.

“The Cats of Paradise” is the first of three episodes featuring Modesty Blaine, a Samantha Crawford-like character who bedevils Bret Maverick (and, later, brother Bart) over the remainder of the series. In this episode, however, Modesty comes across more like Dandy Jim Buckley, only worse: she doesn’t think twice about hiring a gunman to kill Bret. (While Buckley was an all-out grafter, even he had his limitations.) When Maverick‘s audience dropped 5 percent the week after “Paradise” aired, series producer Coles Trapnell took steps to refine the Blaine character.

ACCORDING TO HOYLE
Original Airdate: October 6, 1957

Synopsis. Bret loses more than $17,000 playing poker with Samantha Crawford, a con artist employed by George Cross—who once lost $50,000 to Maverick and is determined to get it back. Samantha claims that Cross is her father and that he needs to recover the money in order to get out of jail. Bret also needs money (two riverboat owners staked him to $5,000, which he promptly lost to Samantha), so he forms a partnership with Samantha. Maverick purchases gambling equipment (with money loaned by Samantha) as part of a scheme to put a crooked game room owner named Joe Riggs out of business. But Samantha and Cross decide to double-cross Maverick by selling the equipment to Riggs.

Besides marking the first appearance of Diana Brewster (Leave It to Beaver, The Fugitive) as con artist Samantha Crawford, “According to Hoyle” features these two famous Pappyisms: “Faint heart never filled a flush” and “Man is the only animal you can skin more than once.”

POINT BLANK
Original Airdate: September 29, 1957

Synopsis. Maverick settles temporarily in the small railroad town of Bent Forks, where he soon falls in love with Molly Gleason, a woman with a somewhat disreputable past (played by Karen Steele). Bret doesn’t realize that Molly and her lover, a bank teller named Ralph Jordan (Mike Connors), plan to use him as a pawn in their scheme to embezzle $100,000.

“Point Blank” was originally conceived as the pilot for Maverick. As far as series creator Roy Huggins was concerned, it’s still the “real” pilot. The reason why is laid out in “Birth of a Legend,” Part 1 of Maverick: Legend of West.

THE SHERIFF OF DUCK ‘N’ SHOOT
Original Airdate: September 27, 1959

Synopsis. The conniving judge of Duck ‘n’ Shoot (population 1,018) wants Bret as the town sheriff after apparently witnessing Maverick knock out a rowdy cowboy with only one punch. Bret explains it was all a mistake (the man was actually hit in the face by his horse) but the judge doesn’t see it that way—he blackmails Maverick into taking the position by withholding his $5,000 poker winnings for six months. Although Bret proves to be an effective (if not orthodox) sheriff, he tries desperately to get out of the job. When he learns about a plan to rob the bank, Bret decides to do it himself (by foiling the scheme and then returning the money, he hopes to bargain his way out of town). But when the plan backfires, Maverick lands in jail.
