We will dedicate our entire two-hour program this week to the life and career of Regis Philbin, the iconic talk show host and game show host who passed away on Friday, July 24 at age 88. A staple on television, both nationally and locally, for more than five decades, Philbin turned aggravation into an art form every day on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee (and, later, Live with Regis and Kelly) before making ABC the No. 1 network in 1999 and 2000 as host of the game show phenomenon Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Our colleague Greg Ehrbar worked with Philbin behind the scenes on the annual Disney Christmas Parade telecasts, which Regis hosted for many years along with Joan Lunden. He’ll share some memories with us during our first hour. Television historian Steve Beverly will join us in our second hour for an in-depth look at Philbin’s career with ABC, as well as why Millionaire became such a huge hit. Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen will discuss Philbin’s roots in local television, including his successful run as host of A.M. Los Angeles.
We’ll also play highlights from our 2016 tribute to Joey Bishop in which Phil Gries and I discussed Philbin’s turbulent two-and-a-half-year stint as the announcer and on-air sidekick on Joey Bishop’s late night talk show (ABC, 1967-1969), including archived audio footage from Nov. 26, 1969—the night that Bishop stepped down as host on the air, about ten minutes into the program, after ABC had informed him earlier in the day that it had canceled the show. We’ll hear archive audio footage of Philbin speaking extemporaneously that night about how Bishop went to bat for him, despite ABC’s efforts to drop Regis from the show. We’ll also hear highlights from Phil Gries’ interview with Bishop from 2002 in which Bishop discussed his relationship with Philbin, on and off the air.
