Fans of Happy Days know that Linda played characters that dated both Richie and the Fonz, while fans of Andy Griffith know that she played Ben Matlock’s daughter Charlene during the first season of Matlock.
What you may not know is that Linda Purl is also an accomplished singer and musical performer who has starred on Broadway (including the musical production The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) and performed as a jazz singer in venues all over the world.
Linda Purl has also released five albums—the latest of which, Taking a Chance on Love, includes fresh takes on classic pop tunes from The Great American Songbook. Linda Purl will join us in our second hour.
Proceeds from sales of Linda Purl: Taking a Chance on Love will support the Actors Fund.
Our first hour will include an encore presentation of a special edition of The Sounds of Lost Television from August 2013, in which Phil Gries presented audio highlights of how network television and network radio covered The March on Washington. The day on which more than 200,000 Americans of every age, race and religion came to Washington, D.C. to support the passage of the landmark Civic Rights Bill, the March on Washington also marked the day on which Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his now iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
Featuring audio from Phil’s private collection, this special program includes archive comments from such luminaries as author James Baldwin, event organizers Bayard Rustin and Philip Randolph (two members of the “Big Six”), ABC News correspondent Howard K. Smith, and Dr. King himself.
