John Byner’s first break in network television occurred in New York City, when he appeared on Merv Griffin’s Talent Scouts show in 1964. That led to seventeen appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, thirty-seven appearances on The Johnny Carson Tonight Show, and a host of other movie and TV appearances over the next five decades, including Soap (as Detective Donahue), Something Else, The Practice, The John Byner Comedy Hour, Comedy on the Road, An Evening at the Improv, Transylvania 6-5000, Stroker Ace, The Great Smokey Roadblock, and the Showtime comedy variety series Bizarre, as well as nightclub appearances in New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, and other venues all over the world. Known for his impressions of such legends as John Wayne, Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis, Bing Crosby, and Ed Sullivan, not to mention the voices of both the Ant and the Aardvark on the popular DePatie-Freleng animated series of the same name, John discovered his gift for mimicry as a young boy, growing up as one of six children in a family on Long Island. It not only helped John stand out from his siblings, but helped him overcome his shyness. John Byner’s memoir, Five Minutes, Mr. Byner, includes many highlights of his career on TV, movies, nightclubs, and the Broadway stage. He not only shares many stories of his work with the likes of Steve Allen, Mel Torme, Dinah Shore, Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan, Henry Fonda, and Elvis Presley, but gives readers a glimpse of the person behind each of these performers. John Byner will join us in our second hour.

Also this week: We will welcome back Steve Beverly, television historian and professor of communications arts at Union University (Jackson, TN), where he coordinates the Broadcast Journalism major and supervises the daily student-produced newscast, Jackson 24/7. Also a former news director and on-air correspondent for WBBJ-TV, Steve hosts Steve Beverly’s TV Classics, a weekly TCM-like festival of classic shows from the 1950s and ‘60s that streams every week from EPlusTV Channel 6 in Jackson. Among other topics: We’ll talk to Steve about the challenges that he and his students faced earlier this year, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced classes at Union to go online—as well as the game plan that he and his colleagues have in place as the school prepares to resume in-classroom teaching this fall. A member of the National Association on Mental Illness, Steve Beverly is ready, willing and able to speak to any television news operation in America about depression, as well as recognizing and coping with surviving vulnerabilities to mental illness in one of the most rewarding but highest-stress professions: TV news. Contact Steve directly for more information about the seminars and webinars that he provides.
