HOLIDAY AT HOLLOW ROCK

Synopsis. Bret spends the Fourth of July in Hollow Rock, where he hopes to make some easy money by betting on Silver King, the prize quarter-horse owned by his friend Colonel Arnold Taylor, in the town’s annual horse race. When crooked Sheriff Jesse Carson robs and beats Bret out of more than $4,200, Maverick uses the race to even the score.

William Reynolds previously appeared in “Rope of Cards” and “Diamond in the Rough.” George O’Hanlon, best known as the voice of George Jetson, starred in the Joe McDoakes comedy shorts that Richard Bare, who directed “Holiday at Hollow Rock,” wrote and directed for Warner Bros.

Synopsis. Trouble ensues for Ben Maverick when he inherits a pat hand from a gambler who died during a high-stakes poker game.

Young Maverick (CBS, 1979-1980) was an ill-fated attempt to update the Maverick formula of the late 1950s to TV audiences of the late 1970s. Starring Charles Frank as Ben Maverick, the Harvard-educated son of Cousin Beauregard Maverick, the series faced an uphill fight during its brief network run and was canceled after just six broadcasts. The two-part episode “Dead Man’s Hand” featured Howard Duff, future Emmy Award winner James Woods, and future Knots Landing star Donna Mills.

DESTINATION: DEVIL’S FLAT
Original Airdate: December 25, 1960

Synopsis. Wells Fargo authorities, long frustrated by the antics of train robber Incredible Clay Corey, dispatch undercover agents throughout the Kansas City railway to find the notorious bandit, whose description is unknown. The $2,000 reward for Corey’s capture entices Bart, who finds himself flat broke (and extremely hungry) in the small town of Crenshaw, Kansas. Bart meets Marybelle McCall, an apparently reformed faro dealer who is traveling with her minister uncle—along with $50,000 in church donations—to Devil’s Flat, Colorado, where they plan to build another mission. Maverick becomes suspicious when the sheriff of Crenshaw (who is really Clay Corey) takes a personal interest in the money’s whereabouts.

THE GIRL IN THE BAY CITY BOYS CLUB
Original Air Date: December 19, 1975

Synopsis. A man named Phelps hires Rockford to determine if the weekly Thursday night poker game held at the Bay City Boys Club is fixed. Rockford doesn’t realize that his client is Burton Kimball, a prominent deputy district attorney heavily in debt to racketeer George Welles, who founded the club as a front to his operation. Kimball, who has been blackmailed by Welles into fixing cases, needs evidence against Welles to escape his grasp. When Kimball is later found dead, Jim deduces that the D.A. was close to obtaining the proof he needed. With the help of fellow investigator Kate Doyle, Rockford tries to put Welles and the Bay City Boys Club out of business by determining how the game was rigged.

“The Girl in the Bay City City Boys Club” marked the directorial debut of James Garner. The episode asked a great deal of the actor (particularly when it came to staging the complicated foot chase near the end of the episode), and he acquitted himself well. Nevertheless, Garner chose not to direct again.

THE BOLD FENIAN MEN
Original Airdate: December 18, 1960

Synopsis. The Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood, also known as the Fenians, are trained soldiers sworn to free Ireland from British rule. The Fenians have gathered in Dakota City (under the banner of the First Annual Convention of the Sons of the Shamrock Chowder and Marching Society) to plan a march into Canada—they want to hold a small part of that British property hostage in exchange for Ireland’s freedom. After England pressures the United States to intervene, a shrewd Army colonel “blackmails” Beau Maverick into infiltrating the Fenians’ ranks.

The Fenians really existed. “They came to the United States at the time of the Civil War,” Maverick producer Coles Trapnell said in an interview for Maverick: Legend of the West. “They fought on both sides—some for the Confederacy, some for the Union. After the war, they drifted up to the Northeast United States, and hatched their plot to take over Canada. The U.S. Secret Service nipped it in the bud, arrested all the Fenians, and deported them back to Ireland.”

THE SPANISH DANCER
Original Airdate: December 14, 1958

Synopsis. While peddling goods in the New Mexico mining camp of Riverhead, Bart and Gentleman Jack Darby fall for Elena Grande (played by Adele Mara), an exotic dancer who hopes one day to buy back the ranch that her family once owned. When Bart wins a flooded mine from crooked camp owner John Wilson, he enlists Jack and Elena’s help in an elaborate scheme to drain the mine at Wilson’s expense.

Adele Mara was a perfect choice for the title role. A popular pin-up girl earlier in her career, she also performed as a classical Spanish dancer for renowned bandleader Xavier Cugat. Although Mara had danced many times before on film (including her unforgettable performance in the “Seed of Deception” segment of Maverick), this episode marked the first time she performed an actual Spanish dance on film. The dances she performs were authentic dances from the 1876 period.

THE GOOSE-DROWNDER
Original Airdate: December 13, 1959

Synopsis. Stranded in the ghost town of Silverado, Nevada, Bart and Gentleman Jack Darby (Richard Long) spend the night with the town’s lone resident, Boone Gillis (played by Will Wright). They are later joined by a hold-up gang that just robbed the stagecoach of its payroll. Among the passengers: Rance, a wounded gunslinger (H.M. Wynant), and Stella Legendre (Fay Spain), a dance hall girl whom Maverick once met in Abilene.

One of the few episodes of Maverick that has little to no comedy in it, “The Goose-Drownder” is a taut, tense drama that showcases Jack Kelly’s range as a performer. Besides exhibiting cool under pressure during the surgery sequence, Kelly as Maverick displays a rare show of anger when Darby questions Bart’s love for Stella.
